Here’s a quick recap of last summer’s activities at our Headquarters – our greenhouse location – as we look forward to the fall harvest:

As summer temperatures soared, the greenhouse temperatures soared even higher, making it unbearably hot. We moved our microgreens operation outdoors for experimentation, but decided to shift our primary focus to raised beds for the later part of the season. Through daily monitoring, watering, weeding, and harvesting, the ten 4′ x 8′ beds at Headquarters produced radishes, beets, beans, zucchini, kale, tomatoes, onions, and carrots. Though some plants complete their production by this time of the year, the eggplant and peppers are in their prime!

Beyond a beautiful bounty of fresh vegetables, the crowning point of the summer was setting up 4′ x 4′ raised beds for neighbors, and nearby school, Lincoln Prep. The summer school students at Lincoln were thrilled to visit the Cleveland Roots Headquarters garden. They watered the beds, tasted radishes, and shoveled soil into wheelbarrows. Back at their school, they filled the frames with soil, spread it out, and took turns planting. They planted an herb garden and a pizza garden — filled with tomatoes, peppers, basil, and oregano. Many of the students had never had an experience in a garden, so it was deeply important to give them just that.

Every Tuesday Amanda continues to pack for and set up the Cleveland Roots booth at the Tremont Farmers’ Market in Lincoln Park. There she sells CR’s harvest to local consumers, with all proceeds going back to Cleveland Roots’ programs and outreach efforts.
